Once Hoffman started using “Hells Bells” to herald his arrival on the scene, the closer-/entrance-song thing took off. Overnight, the goateed and mulleted men o’ the pen started forcing PA system attendees, likely at knifepoint, to familiarize themselves with the artistry and sophistication of Godsmack. Side note: Despite the song’s foreboding BONG! BONG!, rabid Brian Johnson squeals and angular Angus Young riffery, Hoffman has for years gotten by on guile and a 37-mph changeup. Oh, the irony.
