In “Oh L’Amour,” Erasure’s first big hit, Andy Bell asked, “What’s a boy in love supposed to do?” Fortunately, he figured
it out—he’s supposed to vamp onstage in a turquoise-sequined mermaid gown and shake what his mama gave him. This late-’80s English synth-pop duo was, roughly speaking, the gayest band ever, at a time when even George Michael was in the closet.
Bell was one of the hair decade’s most brazenly emotional belters—“Drama!” sounds like the mother of all backstage shoe-throwing tantrums—and his token-straight-boy partner, Vince Clarke, supplied the kind
of dance-pop tunes he’d perfected in Depeche Mode and Yaz. This box, featuring all 39
of their singles, thrives on slutty electrobeats, smeared-lipstick soul and a DVD of eye-popping TV performances. Funniest live moment? “Victim of Love” from 1987, where Clarke mimes
along to the original synth-disco track—with an acoustic guitar.
