The Motor City Five were armed hippie freaks who turned good vibes into raw power in late-60s Detroit. They took tight, bluesy garage rock and drove it to the intersection of heavy metal (which they invented as much as anybody) and punk. Their three studio albums were poorly produced, and guess whatthese three bootlegged live shows make the studio stuff sound golden. The first disc, a 1968 show, is barely listenable, while disc two, from 1970, is way better and worth the price of admission. There are two incredible versions of the groups set-ender Black to Comm, a rave-up that still sounds radical. Disc three was recorded at a Unitarian church in Detroit in 1968, and it turns out God needs to kick out the jams too.
