When they glided onto the British charts in 1990, Slowdive inspired awestruck critics to reach for the thesaurus, though the Manic Street Preachers, a group outraged by the Oxford quintet’s dreamy blankness, branded them “worse than Hitler.” It’s hard to see how Slowdive’s early, reverb-heavy homages to My Bloody Valentine ignited such passions. Their later, stronger albums Souvlaki (featuring genius producer Brian Eno) and Pygmalion form the bulk of this double-CD British set, perfect for anyone intrigued by the band’s influence on moody new acts such as Death in Vegas and Sigur Rós. Drifting between sparse, vocal-led psychedelia and barely-there ambience, the second disc is often hair-raisingly beautiful: music to lose yourself inside.
