The cover to 1959’s No One Cares encapsulates these albums: Frank sits at a busy bar. Around him beautiful people laugh and joke, but Frank is alone with his whiskey, cigarette and downcast eyes. Hell, he’s so melancholy he hasn’t even taken off his hat and trench coat. Then the album begins: “When no one cares and the phone never rings … ” After that, “I’ll Never Smile Again” sounds cheery. But in terms of cut-glass desperation, No One Cares is trumped by its predecessor, 1957’s Where Are You?, Sinatra’s first stereo album and first collaboration with conductor-arranger Gordon Jenkins. When Sinatra sings “Maybe You’ll Be There,” we know that she won’t — and that Frank will soon wend his way back to the bar. Alone again, naturally.
