Long before female rappers bluntly demanded sexual satisfaction, Heart had the 1980 rock hit Even It Up, in which singer Ann Wilson chides a man she has pleased in bed who refuses to reciprocate by giving her an orgasm not that shes coarse enough to use the word. With wayward passion as their abiding theme, Ann and guitarist sister Nancy Wilson began cranking out hits in 1976, compiling a string of 20 Top 40 singles into the 90s. This two-disc, 37-track set commemorates the durability of the Wilsons, who gave hard pop a good name. In bar-band days, Heart were called little Led Zeppelin for their sound and taste in cover songs. Their instant-smash debut, Dreamboat Annie, followed Zeps lead, ranging from folksy ballads (the title track) to rowdy rockers (the lust-mad Crazy on You). Blessed with a big, bright voice that throttled gracefully, Ann made even their rudest songs, such as the crunchy, Zep-based Barracuda, bubble exuberantly. The hits seemed to end after five solid albums, but then Heart staged a startling comeback. Switching record labels (from Epic to Capitol), the Wilsons generated four Top 10 entries from their self-titled 1985 album, including These Dreams, the first of two number 1 singles. The artistic trade-off was high, however, with busy keyboards, shrill guitars and a Grand Canyons worth of echo evoking arena-rock overkill. Most crucially, later singles came mainly from outside writers, such as Diane Warren, who had skill but little soul. Anns still-resplendent voice was wasted on dreck like What About Love?, though she wailed to thrilling effect on I Didnt Want to Need You. Lately, the sisters have played as the Lovemongers, and Nancy has written soundtrack music for husband Cameron Crowes movies, including Almost Famous. Theyve recently decided to relaunch Heart, possibly inspired by the way their ideals of female independence have finally infused pop music.
