Kiss Kaskets, Kiss Kondoms, Tongue magazine — there appears to be no end to the entrepreneurial efforts of Kiss bassist Gene Simmons. His extramusical pursuits may have no value to anyone but obsessive kollectors, but this compilation of Kiss’s best tunes is hard to dismiss as sheer opportunism. What distinguishes The Very Best from the band’s four (!) previous hits collections is the glorious presence of Ace Frehley’s 1978 solo single “New York Groove,” plus a version of “Rock and Roll All Nite” from Alive! and two post-makeup singles (the vile “Forever,” cowritten by Michael Bolton, and the overblown “God Gave Rock and Roll to You”). But the other 17 songs, from the drooling “Doctor Love” to the fist-pumping “Shout It Out Loud,” constitute the template of hair metal in one place. And that’s no rip-off.
