Walking on a Dream
(Astralwerks)
Release Date: 04/21/2009
Reviewed by Tyler Gray
Walking on a Dream initially sounds as familiar as montage music in an HBO midday movie, but it will haunt your dreams. Acoustic guitar strummed in time with dance beats, tinny vocals and tons of slap-back reverb—it’s like some magical pop formula concocted long ago by aboriginal Australian shamen and parceled out ever since to INXS, Midnight Oil, Outback Steakhouse jingle makers and now this turquoise-loving duo. They mine the dark matter between funk, rock and new wave, but if you had to guess, based on their white makeup, topaz flair, crystal-ball collections and Captain EO jackets, you might suspect they were magicians from the future who astral-projected back to the Ming Dynasty. Or they’ve eaten a shitload of grade-A ’shrooms. Probably that.
