Mean Everything to Nothing
(Favorite Gentlemen/Canvasback)
Release Date: 04/21/2009
The Georgia tourism bureau should build a campaign around Manchester Orchestra’s new record. Dizzying synths bend like the Georgia Cyclone at Six Flags. Guitars are fuzzier than a July peach. Black Sabbath-y riffs rock harder than a trip up Stone Mountain. If only it weren’t so damn sinful. After a few EPs and an LP, songwriter and preacher’s kid Andy Hull has figured out how to balance his emo wails about God with less-than-holy references to darkness and addiction. When he pushes to the top of his girly range (on “The Only One” and “100 Dollars”), Manchester Orchestra sound like Neutral Milk Hotel—about as authentically Georgian as indie rock gets. With this foulmouthed, backsliding rock, Hull and his flock do Dixie real proud.
