Sounds of the Universe

Almost 30 years after “Dreaming of Me,” Dave Gahan still brings an absurd amount of enthusiasm to the role of the world’s favorite sexy robot boy. He can’t keep himself from preening irresistibly, even when he’s venting Martin Gore’s sulkiest lyrics. That’s probably why they make such an enduring team. Sounds of the Universe kicks off with the spiky, twisted and impossibly gorgeous “Wrong,” an epic blast of synth-pop bombast on the scale of Violator or Black Celebration. The Mode men dig up some vintage electro effects, going back to the sound of their earliest records—“Peace,” “Jezebel” and “Perfect” have the appealingly fizzy disco buzz of “Just Can’t Get Enough.” You could roll your eyes and complain that these guys are still pimping teen angst in middle age, but really it sounds more like it’s matured into the longest-running mid-life crisis ever—30 years and counting.
