Silversun Pickups have grander daydreams than their peers. They don’t want to be cute or inspiring, in the current rock fashion, but grimy and haunting and sexy, like bands were in the ’90s: to be “free and so untrue,” as Brian Aubert sang on “Lazy Eye,” the breakout single from their 2006 debut. (Breakout rock singles: also very ’90s.) Their 10 new songs average more than five minutes, and they use the time to stack arrangements like store shelves. “There’s No Secrets This Year” starts the CD with snarling guitars and lyrics about lies and betrayal, and the mood never lightens. Swoon also introduces a vulnerable side: On “Draining,” Aubert’s dude-sings-like-a-lady tenor conjures false hope for a relationship he knows is doomed. SSPU salute misery as a kind of ideal, the opposite of love but just as beautiful.
