PJ Harvey’s umpteenth album is only the second co-billed with John Parish, her on-and-off band member, producer and enabler. Parish brings out Harvey’s crazy, arty side, pushing to extremes as she works her long-established territory of sex and death. The sparse, primal songs on A Woman a Man Walked By make her a raspy avenger, a strange child, a cackling biddy and a barking dog; they’re full of animal images, including a pig and “chicken-liver parts,” and animal energy, as when Harvey brays,
“I want his fucking ass.” Parish, a guitarist and keyboardist, has the extra chops to devise music that lurches and stomps unpredictably or floats into the ether. Pop is far away; these songs teeter on the brink of madness or unbearable loss.
