4 Life

In December 2007, Pimp C died after overdosing on prescription cough syrup. He and Bun B made up UGK, whose popularity is extreme among cognoscenti (devotees include Jay-Z, Lil Wayne and OutKast) and scant otherwise. Their final album is no solemn headstone. The languid beats are hazy with heat-distortion organs and porny electric guitars; the spirit is carefree. Here’s Bun, nimble and booming as he serenades candy-painted cars for the zillionth time with none of his verve diminished. Here’s Pimp, slick and insinuating, comparing his dick to a chicken wing. A song about former Panamanian dictator Manuel Noriega’s ties to the U.S. abuts one called “Harry Asshole,” which celebrates hirsute nether regions. Pimp excelled at scowling, bawdy boasts, and he creates his own eulogy here: Pimp C, 1974–2007. Lived fast, drove slow, put his meat in your wife’s spine.
