Fuckbook
(Matador)
Release Date: 03/24/09
Making up stuff is fun—ask a 4-year-old, or a president. Here, Yo La Tengo, the cuddliest noise trio on Earth, pretend they’re a long-lost garage band called Condo Fucks, mythical kingpins of New London, Connecticut’s underground. They’re already a garage band from Hoboken, New Jersey, so the concept isn’t wildly ambitious, just a chance to cover ’60s and ’70s punk lunks like the Voidoids, Flamin’ Groovies, Electric Eels and Slade. The sound quality is appropriately assy, and guitarist Ira Kaplan has fun playing a pissed-off leather-jacket pimplehead. But Yo La’s gentle side naturally peeks out. They wrap the Kinks’ tender “This Is Where I Belong” in an argyle sweater of comfy drone, and Ira’s drumming wife Georgia Hubley lovingly mumbles the Troggs’ “With a Girl Like You” as if no one beyond their driveway will ever enter her tiny, private bliss.
