Forgive Micachu for seeming like a fictional character devised by a marketing team to be hipster catnip: She uses homemade instruments! Björk endorsed her! She wrote experimental music for the London Philharmonic Orchestra! Micachu has made one of the strongest debuts of the year: Her sound is wild steam-punk, a time-bent play between high and low tech, with glitchy bleeps and fizzes of synthesizer futurism atop manic junkyard-jam skiffles (yes, that’s a vacuum squealing on “Turn Me Well”). “Calculator” swings a cheeky technophobe’s blues to what sounds like a printer jammed with the ’50s surf-rock riff from “Tequila,” and “Sweetheart” is an incandescent garage-rock shock of live-fast-die-young teenage nerves. Below the weirdness, this 21-year-old East Londoner has a knack for capturing all the ways technology and romance make strange bedfellows.
