Pat Green is a Texas Country singer, which means he writes songs about Texas beer, Texas women and what an unfortunate son of a bitch you’d have to be to not have been born in Texas. But beneath his honey-BBQ back-porch drawl and pickup bed full of Shiner empties, he’s downright indie rock. Green spent the better part of a decade recording and self-releasing his records DIY style, and five albums into a major-label career, sellout anxiety still haunts him. The bluesy fame tale “In It for the Money” likens Music Row to a New Orleans whorehouse, and “Country Star,” a tongue-in-cheek boot-scooter about getting as big and rich as Big & Rich, drips with good-natured anti-Nashville mockery. Who knew cowboys could be so conflicted?
