The guy has released 14 solo albums; relative to that glut, this two-disc, 32-track career cherry-picker actually seems lean. Predictably, much of the material performs the Pixies trick of chasing soda-pop surf-rock with strychnine screams. Enjoying this music, though, requires a fairly dramatic shift in expectations—the mood is generally more relaxed, there are several country-soul experiments—and Black’s penchant for loopy lyrics can go irksomely unchecked (see the one where he rhymes “abstract house” with “abstract mouse”).
