Even before the group split, Kim Deal felt underused —so with twin sister Kelley, a musical novice, she started the Breeders as an outlet for her own cracked notions of pop. Their second album swerves from scabrous (“Roi”) to loose-limbed (“Drivin’ on 9”). Kim’s voice is an arresting blend of crystalline and eerie as she runs longing and despair through a druggy kaleidoscope of quotable WTF? poetry: “Spitting in a wishing well,” she coos on “Cannonball,” “blown to hell, crash!” A Remember the ’90s alt-rock staple, it reached No. 2 on the Modern Rock charts—a bigger hit than the Pixies ever scored.
