Doolittle is a perfect Pixies primer, the ideal gateway into the band’s universe. Which means this collection, while full of great songs, is pretty pointless. It’s their second best-of—1997’s Death to the Pixies, which has fewer songs but tacks on a live CD of an OK-enough 1990 performance, is out of print—and it improves on its predecessor only by the inclusion of the heartbreaking “Hey.” Both track lists make poor choices when it comes to Surfer Rosa, though—if this disc handles Pixies duty in your collection, be sure to download “Cactus” and “River Euphrates,” too.
