In 1987, they recorded 17 songs in a marathon three-day session. Eight became Come on Pilgrim; the other nine appear here. “Rock a My Soul” is one righteous blast of guitar, and “In Heaven” turns an eerie-pretty ditty from David Lynch’s Eraserhead into a chilling primal scream. The appeal is mostly archeological: hearing the band in its infancy, bashing out sketches of later triumphs. Hardly a bad note on it, but unless you’re the type who’d consider, say, framing a signed set list from the 1989 world tour, your attention is better spent elsewhere.
