Their gently swaying cover of Neil Young’s “Winterlong” was a live staple for years; ditto the beatific Deal drone “Into the White”—you can snag studio versions of both here, along with the grunting “Manta Ray,” which could have comfortably appeared on Surfer Rosa. The rest goes from modest gems and larks (“Santo,” “Build High”) to dorks-only catnip (“The Thing” is an early version of Bossanova’s “The Happening” featuring INXS-style drum-machine thwacks) to the thoroughly inessential (the Lovering-fronted “Make Believe”). >br>
