Francis was a misanthrope-geek: He dated a string of goth girls, nursed a grudge for the faux intellectuals he’d met at college and treated stories from the Bible and the National Enquirer with equal reverence. “I did have some UFO experiences when I was younger,” he said, and on the final Pixies album he delves headfirst into his extraterrestrial jones. On “Motorway to Roswell,” he imagines the trials of a benevolent alien captured by Army men—an unexpectedly touching song about solitude as vast and crushing as the cosmos itself. Santiago’s chomping guitar heroics hold it together, but Deal is barely a ghost.
