Fours years in, Deal later recalled, “I had gotten bored.” Between Doolittle and Bossanova, she formed the Breeders, dodged a guitar Francis kicked at her onstage (she’d shown up late) and was nearly fired. The band reconciled, moved to L.A. and, appropriately, made their sunniest record: “Velouria” is their greatest love song after “Gigantic”; “Ana” is a sand-speckled surfer idyll; and Francis unveils a newfound obsession with friendly aliens on the loony, affecting “The Happening”—“pretty much my favorite song,” he has said.
