Back from a rep-making European tour, they opened for the Cure at Giants Stadium and got a $30,000 check for their next album (Surfer Rosa cost $9,000). Doolittle offsets Rosa-style punk (the throat-razoring “Debaser”) with painfully lovely expanses (the abjectly yearning “Hey”). Deal’s childlike harmonies glide across Francis’ cryptic squeals. Their most dynamic album, it merges an indie rocker’s fetish for oblique noise with a teenybopper’s sweet tooth for hooks.
