Kevin Barnes is as close as indie pop gets to a velvet-hearted love man—he sings in the wiggy falsetto of a guy who treats his imaginary lovers like superstars and desperately wants to write a song for each and every one of them. Skeletal Lamping is a new high for this long-running yet just-peaking band. Barnes’s passions are polysexual for sure—here he wants your “pleasure puss”; there he vows, “I wanna make you ejaculate/Till it’s no longer fun.” His biggest inspiration is Prince, especially his frilly-cummerbund, Restoration-dandy phase. Of Montreal turn Barnes’s fragmented melodies into fizzy faux-funk (“Id Engager”), self-loathing piano balladry (“Touched Something’s Hollow”) and shout-outs to old-school disco (“Come and see/There’s still some gentle people fucking to ‘Strawberry Letter 23’”). Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, the musical breakthrough Of Montreal released last year, was a portrait of two lovers falling apart and coming halfway back together—on this successor, it sounds like they’re working out their issues in the most primal ways.
