These Brooklyn gals have a guitarist named Cassie Ramone and a bassist named Kickball Katy, so it goes without saying they’re not very interested in long solos, complex time signatures or rethinking the studio as an instrument. What they’re interested in is sassy guitar racket, with a bit of B-52’s beach-party frolic in their beat. The recording quality on their debut album is admirably scuzzy; the drums sound like somebody’s banging a cereal box on the floor, which is part of the immediate charm. The jangly guitars would basically fit into any time or place—from the sound, you couldn’t guess whether the Vivian Girls come from 1986 London (they would have been called the Toffeeshop Tabbys) or 1992 Portland (they would have been called Care Bears Lunchbox) or 2001 Detroit (they would have been called the Muzzztaaangs). When they harmonize in the wistful “Tell the World,” they stick in the ear, though it’s hard to imagine them telling the world anything, except maybe where to pick up some cheap vintage corduroys.
