Meet upwardly mobile Travis McCoy: “My original plan was to live as a starving artist,” he raps in “Home.” “But starving artists die hungry, dress bummy.” And how far his crew has come. Aided by coproducer and Fall Out Boy savant Patrick Stump, who is the closest thing emo has to a soul singer, Gym Class Heroes can approximate the ecstatic pop of the Jackson 5 as naturally as if they were dancing to “ABC,” and they skillfully pilfer reggae and pop punk, too. McCoy keeps his eyes fixed on the mirror, and while he’s fond of what he sees—a mischief-maker who gleaned values from his paper route, and whose only true weakness is compulsively scamming on women—he’s defensive, spitting venom at targets as large and shapeless as blogs and “haters.” His delivery is laudably cool for a Warped Tour MC. But it’s gunk on the gears of this dancing machine.
