Slipknot’s declarations of self-hatred have been brutal and relentless, but after almost 10 years of repetition, even a masked band can grow bored. So now, in place of hating themselves, they hate you. For their fourth album, Slipknot debut not only new versions of their twisted face masks, but also some new notions for their familiar theme of decadence: War is hell (“This Cold Black”), relationships can hurt (“Dead Memories”), U.S. politics are evil (“Gematria [The Killing Name]”) and so on. Dark balladry (“Snuff”) and textured melodies paw at the shredded guitar drives, pompous electro squeals and frontman Corey Taylor’s dirty-razor attitude. Finding new targets for their thrashing contempt, Slipknot make ugliness sound just a little bit pretty.
