Millennial emo began as a rallying cry for the oversensitive and undermuscled—songs performed by and about guys unable to get girls. Recently, though, success has changed emo’s M.O.: It’s hard to mope when Pete Wentz, your scene’s de facto leader, just married a Simpson sister. The Academy Is … hail from the same Chicago suburbs as Wentz, record for his label, and their singer, the impossibly-cheekboned William Beckett, apes Wentz’s front-running tendencies on this band’s third album. Collaborating with producers-hitmakers S*A*M and Sluggo (Gym Class Heroes, Blake Lewis), Beckett sounds like the most popular kid in his class, wedding memories of high school triumphs (kisses in the darkroom, post-class canoodling) with glistening, world-beating guitar-pop choruses. “Summer Hair = Forever Young” and the especially exultant “His Girl Friday” are made for winners, not whiners. Beware of jocks in the mosh pit.
