“Didn’t sleep last night/Couldn’t calm down,” singer Sam Eastgate croons while a synth vamps like a bleary digital alarm clock on the first verse of “Broken.” Fifty seconds into the track and this British four-piece has already burned through three manic riffs most synth-rock bands couldn’t muster in a whole album; no wonder these dudes can’t sleep. Oozing ambiguous sexual energy and falsetto glam-rock hysterics, hopped up on a mess of ’80s uppers from Gary Numan’s synth grooves (“Bathroom Gurgle”) to Talking Heads’ chops (“The Enemy Are the Future”), LOTP have made one of the most vital EPs of the year, with a full CD to come in January. They’re not just churning out electro-scuzz-soaked romps, they’re reclaiming music’s right to drop the verse-chorus-verse form, set out on weird five-minute electronic benders and end up somewhere strange and exciting.
