Brazilian Girls

The debut album by New York’s Brazilian Girls celebrates grooves (“Dance Till the Morning”), sex (“Pussy”), getting high (“Don’t Stop”) and internationalism (the whole album). It’s almost ridiculously chic, but look closer: They’re not Brazilian, there’s only one girl and the moment you worry about whether or not to take them seriously, you’re missing the fun of the record. Under samples of accordion, cavaquinho, tango orchestras and whatever else, there’s a funky live quartet at work, backing up Italian singer Sabina Sciubba, who sounds like spring water in six different languages. Echoes of Portishead, the Specials’ second album and Bebel Gilberto mark the basic territory, but don’t miss their nicely vulgar sense of humor.
