This Eurotrash electro crew scored club hits like “Playgirl” and “Seventeen,” which soundtracked many an after-hours coat-check-line grope session in some of the civilized world’s sleazier rock bars. Ladytron seemed destined to fizzle out; indeed, that seemed to be the point. Except they’ve not only stayed on the case, they’ve gotten even better. On this produced-in-Paris gem, they beef up chilly synth-pop tunes with elegantly distorted guitar, German-industrial drum loops and plenty of goth gloom. Helen Marnie and Mira Aroyo sing “Burning Up” in the breathy voices of jaded girl robots lost in a metropolitan night world where their batteries are running down and only the bass line can keep them alive. “Black Cat” has hypnotic keyboard drones, heavy rock percussion and psychedelic guitar drowned in echo and reverb, as Aroyo sings surreal poetry—in Bulgarian, of course. Creepy and sexy at the same time.
