They hail from Athens, Georgia, the birthplace of college rock. They recorded their lo-fi debut in a frat house while still undergrads at UGA. No wonder the Whigs’ 2005 Give ’Em All a Big Fat Lip sounded like a campus-radio transmission that had been bouncing around the stratosphere for 15 years: scrappy like the Replacements, alt-twangy like Uncle Tupelo and about half as good as both. This successor improves, sonically (recording in a studio with a producer will do that) and in its energy and sharp writing. A sense of cockiness even creeps in: “’Cause I don’t care, I’m already young,” frontman Parker Gispert boasts. The Whigs are starting to sound like big men on campus.Download: “Like a Vibration,” “Already Young”
