Adolescence can be scary—not just for teens who take solace in feeling-bad-feels-good pop-punk, but for the bands, too. Exhibit A: Simple Plan, peppy Canucks who, on their first two albums, seemed content to riff on the travails of childhood and make a few good balls jokes in the process. Album three aims for maturity, but the results are stunted. ’Roided up by the carnival beats and stabby synths of (respectively) Timbaland associate Danjahandz and Britney Spears producer Max Martin, the band lurches from simpering sentiment (“Save You,” “I Can’t Wait Forever”) to aggro-dude claptrap (“Love Is a Lie,” “Time to Say Goodbye”) with nary an emo cliché left unturned. Only the hooky opener, “When I’m Gone,” hints at a promising adulthood.
