Leslie Feist’s 2004 sleeper hit Let It Die, with its conversational intimacy and songwriting savvy, got her pegged as a hipster Norah Jones. For the more confident follow–up, Feist bunkered in a French manor house with some simpatico musicians, giving her songs a congenial kitchen–table ambience. She browses genres with a light touch, attiring her everyday romantic dramas in hushed folk (“The Park”), brassy country–soul (“1234”), wry Tin Pan Alley pop (“Brandy Alexander”) and sparkling indie rock (“I Feel It All”). This sense of playful adventure ensures that smooth needn’t mean snoozy.
