The DFA Remixes: Chapter One

With LCD Soundsystem’s mind-blowing eponymous album behind him, frontman James Murphy has gathered together some of the discofied delights that have cemented the reputation of DFA, the label and remix team he runs with partner Tim Goldsworthy. The handclaps will make you happy, but it’s DFA’s prog moves and knowing, if self-deprecating, nods that make this music for the head as well as the hips. Dig the cheeky Steve Reich and Fleetwood Mac allusions, or the retarded analog farts the duo add to Blues Explosion’s “Mars Arizona.” The master cut here is the 10-minute Chemical Brothers “The Boxer” remix, which weds abrasive sirens, Stevie Wonder–style funk and lava-lamp melodies into a delirious dancefloor epic. It’s a whole new genre: psychedorky.
