We’ve had emo and screamo, but are the bummed-out youth of America ready for emolectro? Small Sins is 26-year-old Torontonian Thom D’Arcy, who grew tired of hearing his old band the Carnations turn his heartfelt, low-key songs of romantic failure and disappointment into squally punk rackets. Now he releases them in the austere, electro-fied form he conceived, and their charm shines through. Synths soothe, drum machines patter, guitars chug softly and D’Arcy sings so close to the mic he might as well be whispering in your ear. His world—all twentysomething ennui, mood swings, therapy, manipulative junkie girlfriends and dreams of relocating to New York—might be a little too method hipster, and the poor-me tone sometimes grates. But the melodies and disarming intimacy usually save this lovely piece of campfire synth-pop.
