Kicking Television—Live in Chicago

The point in a show when your favorite band starts playing a tranche of new material—particularly “experimental” new material—is usually a good opportunity to visit the restroom, preferably one in a different county. So it’s a testament to the quality of Wilco’s recent records that, while they provide a hefty portion of these two CDs, Kicking Television still sounds like a greatest hits set—albeit one in which the “hits” have been augmented by the alternately elegant and shred-heavy guitar-playing of new member Nels Cline. Among the older material, Wilco feature a barnstorming take on “Misunderstood,” the kind of bitter, slow-burning howl that few but Jeff Tweedy would ever write, and probably only he would consider a suitable opener for a live album. It’s the ultimate anti-“Hello Chicago!” DOWNLOAD: “Misunderstood,” “Handshake Drugs” “Via Chicago”
