When you’re floating in space, your ride makes a difference. The Kentucky-based, cosmos-bound My Morning Jacket gained renown by cobbling together charmingly rustic neo-psychedelia, but here they burst into blockbuster mode. Recording in a fancy upstate New York studio with John Leckie, who’s twisted knobs for many mood-altering acts (Pink Floyd! Radiohead!), MMJ abandon any vestige of hayseed naiveté on lustrous seven-minute epics and beguiling stabs at pop. The band’s warm way with weirdness remains; it’s just flashier now, thanks to better production and skillful new note-benders Carl Broemel on guitar and Bo Koster on keys. Warbler supreme Jim James sounds more confident, though still plenty dreamy, as he offers his usual round of deep thoughts and buzzed jokes. You can let this one grow on you like a summer beard.
