Only British Sea Power would address a song, “Oh Larsen B,” to a collapsing ice-shelf in the Antarctic and make it touching rather than arch. The English quartet has a special affinity for the romance of impending doom—it’s as if four World War I poets had formed a rock band. BSP’s 2003 debut was lauded by Radiohead, David Bowie and the kid who plays Harry Potter; this considerably less prickly follow-up threatens to break their heroic idiosyncrasy big. At once accessible and otherworldly, Open Season sounds as if it was recorded on a howling moor in January. From stirring opener “It Ended on an Oily Stage” to the seagull squawks that conclude the elegiac “True Adventures,” it swells with grace and intrigue.
