Meant to announce the end of his wild period as an acclaimed musical debutante, Rufus Wainwright’s Want One was a rehab record for drama queens, staging every mood swing like a death scene at the opera. Just a year later, this sequel, packaged with a DVD of a 2003 San Francisco concert, reveals a previously unknown side of the singer: modesty. The mood is so uniformly droopy it seems to be affecting Wainwright’s drowsier-than-ever vocals. Even the showstoppers, usually full of witty hissy fits, are notable for their restraint: The haunting “Memphis Skyline” eulogizes the late singer Jeff Buckley; “The Art Teacher” wallows in middle-aged regret; and “Gay Messiah” casts a queer eye on the second coming, while humbly adding, “It won’t be me.”
