MM…Food
(Rhymesayers)

Most rappers don’t wear metal masks and record concept albums about food — but then, MF Doom isn’t like most rappers. Over six years, this Atlanta indie eccentric has released 10 albums under four pseudonyms. He structures Mm…Food like a menu; it’s his oddball way of proving just how versatile he is (who else would think to rhyme “deuce-deuce” with “fruit juice” and “couscous”?). He juggles battle-rap bravado and fever-dream weirdness: His syllable clumps sound like something Ghostface might mutter in his sleep, while his beats mash together slick ’80s soul, hotel-bar jazz and old film soundtracks. The result is unkempt and challenging, but it works. This is an entrancingly loopy dispatch from an unhinged MC with one killer case of the munchies.
