Rappers-turned-actors are a dime a dozen. But rappers-turned-actors-turned-lounge singers? All hail Queen Latifah, aka Dana Owens: cabaret-style blues singer, the sultry sort you might find — no, did find — in the film Chicago. Latifah has a pleasant, if not inimitable, voice, so these cover songs make for easy listening. Sometimes too easy: Her even tone lacks the emotional intensity for a track like Cannonball Adderley’s “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy”; when Latifah sings “have a little bit of mercy for your mama,” she’s politely inquiring, not passionately pleading. The stellar tracks eschew passionate for playful or coy, tones that make us forget: Is this the same artist who boldly tutored women to “let ’em know, you ain’t a bitch or a ho”?
