The New Danger

Mos Def has a strong second career as an actor, and now that he’s back to his original calling, he’s still hamming it up. This is the hip-hop equivalent of an all-stops-pulled, Oscar-ready performance: mushily sentimental, self-righteously indignant and constantly in your face. He wants to be all rap to all people, keeping it bare and raw with bass drum, tambourine and little else on “Sex, Love & Money,” while thrashing loudly yet datedly with his rock band Black Jack Johnson. The many characters here include sexy Boogie Man, boxing warrior Black Jack and a street hero who’s “like James Brown, getting involved” — but like a lot of Hollywood efforts, it’s too long and too preachy.
