Like Broadway soundtracks, X-Ecutioners albums tell only part of the story. What’s missing: the visual reminder that three guys — attacking old vinyl like Benihana chefs slicing up chicken, scratching with elbows and even tongues — can generate songs with ProTools precision and the massive sonic whomp of stadium rockers in encore mode. But this album stands on its own, with guest spots from Cypress Hill and Ghostface Killah, among others, and an emphasis on beats rather than overly technical tricks. Still, their virtuosity shines through on “Like This,” as a bass line accelerates underneath stuttery shouts of “turn it up!” and a stripped-down guitar solo plays off minimalist scratch-skronk — each part jives together seamlessly. In moments of such electric spontaneity, it seems as if the X-Ecutioners can tease out any sound they need, vinyl like Silly Putty under their fingers.
