And the award for outstanding achievement in the fields of emo, prog and psychedelia — all in one song — goes to this fearlessly arty Toronto collective. Last year’s You Forgot It in People was a fine hybrid of cathartic guitar riffs and dense, exploratory prog-rock, and this new collection of B-sides, radio sessions and other miscellany proves that triumph wasn’t a fluke. Throughout, small, intimate sounds build into multi-layered epics, unfolding outward and taking more unexpected turns than The Return of the King. These songs are mostly instrumental, but “Backyards” features a delicate female voice — it sounds childlike until you notice her spooky, puzzling lyrics (“They lost their lives in backyards,” she repeats), which take us into off-putting Poltergeist territory. Like a dream, it sticks with you.
