American Made

Wakefield open their album by bragging that they’ve “Sold Out,” but that cheeky claim is hard to believe: Aaron Escolopio gave up the drum seat in mall-punk titans Good Charlotte to join this band, which is hardly a get-rich-quick scheme. Then again, American Made, Wakefield’s solid debut, shouldn’t do poorly for the Escolopio brothers (that’s right, singer-guitarist Ryan makes Wakefield a family thing). All the TRL-rock trappings are here, including some unthrilling rhythm shifts and goofy hip-hop sound effects, but the romantic confusion on “Heaven’s Coming” is genuine and moving. Even when the boys are girl-baitingly snide on “Un-Sweet Sixteen,” their melodies and enthusiasm make it hard to stay annoyed.
