Brothers and sisters, today’s reading is from the book of Leon. That’s Leon Followill, an itinerant Pentecostal minister from Tennessee and the father of the three brothers who, along with a cousin, form the Kings of Leon. He taught the boys to accompany his preaching, and if they aren’t playing the Lord’s tunes anymore, the Kings sound pretty knowledgeable of the back roads and crossroads of Satan and his chief adversary. Their debut throbs like the Strokes with cross-eyed parents, their songs gritty and economical, their drummer nasty in all the best places. Singer Caleb Followill mumbles and yawns a little too much, but highlights like “Molly’s Chambers,” the industry-bashing “California Waiting” and the secret track “Talihina Sky” choogle smartly, certifiably Southern without sounding retro-rootsy.
