Just like many of his songs, Avant’s name sounds like DeVante, of R&B passion players
Jodeci, but with a few sounds missing. Meanwhile, in French his name means before, as in “before you buy this, surely there’s some European remix of R. Kelly coughing in rhythm that’s more worth your crème de cashish.” The artist’s third offering, Private Room, is an old-age home for New Jack Swing, where such jump tracks as “Hooked on You” and “You” dream of vigor and Viagra, and love ballads like “Don’t Take Your Love Away” dodder around reminiscing over Anita Baker, gumming their Marvin Gaye quotations and pretending that if a groove is flat, it must be smooth. File under: Heard It All Avant.
