Chris Conley is an emo anomaly. While his depressive peers howl and screech, slitting their vocal cords to spare their wrists, the 23-year-old Saves the Day singer treats his voice like a Fabergé egg. He fits an androgynous falsetto to poppy lines that suggest hours spent listening to the Beatles, not his own sobs. This disarming coo helped the group sell 120,000 copies of their last indie record — here, it’s an occasionally beautiful but limited linchpin. Against the bitter grunge builds of “Anywhere With You,” his contrasting voice makes for a great hook — but when he describes a “dandelion floating on the breeze” in “She,” schmaltz bubbles over. Conley could use a few more breakups to check his sentimentality.
